What you’re looking at
Each dot is a country. Tap one, or spin the globe until it sits in the ring, to see what that country’s own news outlets have been publishing over the past day. Bigger dots mean more outlets.
Talking about shows the words that keep turning up in that country’s headlines. Everywhere shows the words turning up in the most countries at once.
Headlines come from the GDELT Project, which monitors news sites worldwide, and link straight to the original outlets. They’re shown in their original language; non-English ones have a translate button. Keywords are counted automatically, so they can be odd, and countries with fewer monitored outlets will look quieter than they are. The data is copied here from time to time, not live; the time of the last copy is at the bottom of the page. Spin Dial doesn’t take a position on any story.
